Business Breakfast about "The challenges facing laboratory systems' integration" Friday 12 February 2010

This business breakfast will be run by John Trigg, a world-famous expert on Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN).

For most laboratories, an Electronic Laboratory Notebook represents the elimination of the last bastion of paper in the laboratory record keeping process, and as such opens up the doorway to a new, fully integrated, electronic world of laboratory information management. But, to say that we are at a tipping point in the move towards an all-electronic laboratory may be overly stating the situation. It creates the opportunity to move on from a set of interconnected applications with incompatible technologies to an integrated laboratory information ecology that brings together technology, scientific skills and expertise with the purpose of delivering high quality science. Translating this vision into a practical solution is, however, no easy matter. Technology in itself is not the barrier; it is our legacy of application-centric approaches, the lack of good data standards, and the constraints of business, legal and regulatory compliance that delay our move to a new paradigm.

The presentation will deal with the following points:

  • Defining the requirements of different types of laboratory
  • Business drivers; productivity, IP protection, Knowledge management
  •  Where do informatics systems fit and what are their limitations?
  • Defining the role of the ELN
  • The challenges facing laboratory systems integration
  • Data formats
  • Media
  • Records management
  • State of the informatics market
  • Sources of solutions
